In Maniac Mansion for the NES, there's a super easy trick you can exploit to avoid capture pretty much any time you're spotted.

Any time you're spotted by a character who is going to throw you into the dungeon (for example if you encounter Nurse Edna in the kitchen near the beginning of the game, or if you walk into Ed's room while he's inside) you can avoid capture by acting quickly. As soon as you're spotted, select the New Kid option and choose a new player. In this example I switched control from Dave to Michael. If you did it fast enough, control will be passed to the new player.

Now you can simply switch back to your original character, and instead of being caught, they will remain in the same location, and your potential captors will be gone. This trick is particularly useful for raiding the refrigerator in the kitchen at the beginning of the game, and making your way toward the garage to get the... whatever's back there? I forgot. You can spill some photo development fluid or something?
