The Port Town II Skip in F-Zero 99 - Is it actually a shortcut?
1,230Man, F-Zero 99 is so stupidly fun that I'm starting to look into time-saving tricks you can execute on each track. I've seen some videos on YouTube about how you can cut across a portion of the track in Port Town II, but does this "skip" actually save you any time?
If you boost before hitting the first jump ramp in Port Town II then hold DOWN on the D-Pad to stay airborne longer, you can turn hard to the right and land on a different section of the track.
This jump allows you to cut across a significant portion of the stage, however, the grabby car thing (F-Zero's equivalent to Lakitu in Mario Kart) will pick you up and place you back on the track just around the first curve.
So does this shortcut actually save you any time? The short answer is yes, but you gotta know where to land and how to position yourself.
If you just jump across the gap and land anywhere, the grabby car will pick you up and pull you backwards and drop you off on a very specific spot on the track, and you will regain control of your car around 10 to 12 seconds into the race (if you're playing in practice mode and using the Blue Falcon like I am in this video).
Racing normally (with the Blue Falcon) will get you to that same spot around 9 to 9.5 seconds, AND you will have forward momentum, so it seems like the shortcut doesn't save time.
However, if you jump across the gap, then TURN LEFT to go the opposite way against traffic and immediately Turn HARD RIGHT to ram into the wall, you will bounce in such a way that you will be facing the direction that the grabby car wants to place you, and you will be near the spot where the grabby car wants to place you.
In other words, if you minimize the amount of time it takes for the grabby car to place you back on the track, you can be placed in the drop-off spot around 8.1 seconds, and if you immediately boost, this can save you a little bit of time (at the cost of some energy).
