The Problem With Video Game Awards 2023
7he Video Game Awards, much like any other award show, is a collection of people who exist to pat themselves on the back over what’s essentially a voting system that favors extremely biased journalists. A quick google search told me that “The Game Awards 2023 will be determined by a combined vote of 90% from an international jury comprising over 100 global media and influencer outlets, along with 10% from fan votes”. It’s actually insane that the fans have such little say when it's their money that makes the industry go around. What’s even more crazy is I’ve seen people fighting about what the game of the year should be online. Why does the outcome matter when the results are essentially not up to us? On top of that awards like game of the year are entirely subjective. You are allowed to have a different opinion and it doesn't even make sense to fight over something biased journalists essentially pick out for you.That’s right I said biased journalists. How many times have we seen journalists give a game a low score because it's too hard or they don’t agree with the game's politics, or there’s too much water. How is it that Hogwarts Legacy, a game that sold the most copies out of any game in 2023 isn’t even a nomination for any of the awards. I’m not saying it deserves to win anything, I'm saying it deserved to be nominated. This is the same game that got a crazy high rating on steam but Wired rated it a 1/10 and the gamer refused to review it saying gamers should not play Hogwarts Legacy “if you care about your trans friends.” Politics matter more to these people than actually doing their job.
