Mortarion's story is indeed a tragic and somber one. Born on the planet of Barbarus, he grew up in a toxic and oppressive environment ruled by warlords and plagued by deadly diseases. Mortarion, along with his adoptive adoptive father and a group of freedom fighters, fought against the tyrants of Barbarus, seeking to liberate the planet's population.
However, their efforts were in vain. Mortarion's adoptive father, known as the "Death Lord," fell victim to the planet's toxic atmosphere and died, leaving Mortarion and his comrades stranded and vulnerable. Mortarion himself succumbed to the poisonous environment, but instead of dying, he was discovered by the Emperor of Mankind.
The Emperor recognized Mortarion's potential and took him as one of his twenty Primarchs, genetically engineered superhumans created to lead the Emperor's Great Crusade and reunite humanity under his rule. Mortarion was given command of the XIV Legion, later known as the Death Guard, and he led his Legion to victory on numerous battlefields.
However, Mortarion's disdain for weakness and his hatred for tyrants ultimately led to his downfall. During the Great Crusade, he discovered that his trusted advisor, Typhon, had made a pact with the Chaos God Nurgle in secret. Mortarion was horrified to learn that his Legion had been unknowingly corrupted by Chaos.
Feeling betrayed and desperate to save his Legion, Mortarion made a fateful decision. He led the Death Guard into the Warp, hoping to escape the clutches of Chaos. But instead, they fell deeper into Nurgle's grasp. The once proud and disciplined Legion became twisted and diseased, their bodies transforming into walking hosts for all manner of plagues and decay.
Now known as the Lord of Decay, Mortarion became a servant of Nurgle, forever bound to the Chaos God's will. He and his Death Guard continue to spread death, disease, and despair throughout the galaxy, their existence a twisted mockery of their original purpose.
Mortarion's sad story encompasses his journey from a noble warrior seeking freedom and justice to a broken and corrupted servant of Chaos. His fall from grace and his transformation into a bringer of plague and suffering reflect the tragic nature of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where even the greatest heroes can be consumed by darkness.
