They had fallen most recently under the glare of Coronavirus-changed last 16 against Barcelona and had also suffered elimination to Real Madrid in 2017 and Chelsea in 2012—both at the same stage.
In these times, Napoli were more a hipster’s favourite, their line led by an Edinson Cavani or a Maurizio Sarri prowling the touchline.
In 1990, Napoli were one of the best teams in Europe—just as they are now—when they were beat to the final eight by Spartak Moscow on penalties. This was the time of Maradona and Careca: when Naples last had an Italian champion.
