We've asked questions in regards to their properties. Although Alpha Trion expressed that its not necessarily the cog itself that defines the user. There were scenes that proved otherwise. Such as D-16 receiving further enhancements to his body. 1 would assume that he used that particular cog since Megatronus was his favorite. Not to mention he was considered the biggest and strongest Prime. But it was shown multiple times that D-16 possessed above average strength. What's sad is that his previous Cog was once held by Onyx Prime, who had the power to see the future. And it could've possibly given D-16 the forsight of his future. He most likely knew that Orion would become Optimus. And chose to discard the cog because he no longer needed it. He knew what he'd become which was a necessary evil.
