I'm trying to make more of an effort to fill out the map and visit some more of the local towns and villages. It seems to be paying off, with about half the land and all of the rivers discovered. And it looks like if you bring a decent supply of trade goods along and don't make enemies of the locals, you can keep your expedition fed more or less indefinitely on land, so that's a good thing.
Also accidentally stumbling across a mine and learning how to set up forts, though I'm not exactly sure what forts do for you other than leaving people and supplies behind to keep from overloading your ships. It's possible that's all they do.
Next time, I'm undecided whether to check up on the forts, fill in more of the inland map of the main continent, try looking for additional landmasses to the north or south, or some combination of those.
...aaaaand scratch that. My computer had other ideas, and the world I was exploring has been lost in a hard drive failure, before I thought to make a backup. 'Tis a shame, but at least I still have the emulator and game disks, so next time will start over with a another new world...
