Hmm, exploration didn't seem to like XL/XE, apparently. Switching back to 400/800 mode!
Just sailing around the coast of what looks to be the main continent and exploring a bit inland was enough for 34% land exploration, so probably that's going to be the bulk of the land.
Men left in forts apparently do eat through the food you leave, and starve if left alone too long. Or maybe they just abandon it? Hard to tell. Either way, leaving a fort probably isn't the best idea unless you're going to return fairly quickly.
Returning east at the wrong latitude will get you back to port, but apparently with an added delay. As I recall, there's a date after which your achievements no long count toward your ranking, though you can, I believe, continue exploring as long as you like regardless.
Also, my first mission! I'm not sure what they do besides let you take supplies without using goods, and I'm also not sure if I was supposed to leave some men behind to run it. Guess we'll find out next time?
