The Seven Cities of Gold (Atari 8-bit) meandering exploration - part 5
Back to exploring. I think I'll all least check on that village that offered to become a mission, and go exploring up the rivers I skipped before.
So, after heading back to that village, it looks like that mission offer is off the table. I'm pretty sure I was expected to leave some men behind, and they natives seem a bit upset that I basically blew them off. Fair enough!
Later on, the expedition came dangerously close to wiping out from lack of food. For a while, I was wondering if it had something to do with the gold mine or possibly something glitching out, but upon reviewing the recording, it turns out I lost five men at once in a pueblo town after bumping into some unfriendly natives, and the overloaded survivors apparently preferred to abandon the food so they could hold onto as much gold as possible. Fools! But perhaps accurate enough from a historical perspective. As a result, I all but three of the remaining men, and most of the gold besides.
A bit over an hour in, we also saw some trees looking a bit psychedelic. I was worried that was a glitch or a side effect of not having enough food on hand, but given the latitude and the month, I'm pretty sure that's just something that happens in autumn. Neat!
Next time, I think I'll try filling in the rest of the main continent's map. There's almost certain to be additional islands out in the unexplored regions of the ocean, though.
