The transfer Alan Shearer REGRETS he didn't make
It was the big What If transfer scenario of its day. Alan Shearer had run his course at Blackburn Rovers, a year after winning the Premier League and someone was going to have to stump up world record breaking cash to prise him away from Ewood Park.
The two suitors leading the way, brandishing 15 million pounds sterling were champions Manchester United and Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United, flush with cash and ready to contend again. Newcastle had a 12-point lead over Man Utd the previous summer but squandered it. They needed to bridge that gap. Meanwhile, Alex Ferguson needed someone to compliment Eric Cantona and Andy Cole.
In the end, Shearer went to Newcastle and won nothing prior to his retirement in 2006. In the ten years, Man United won umpteen league titles, a couple of FA Cups, a League Cup and the Champions League.
Would Man United have won the treble?
Would Newcastle have challenged for the title?
Would Solskjaer and Sheringham played for United?
