Keep in mind that backgrounds have a roleplay element to them in many cases, but they also give you a variety of bonus proficiencies along with additional languages that can give you access to additional dialogue options and quests within Solasta: Crown of the Magister. Plus, the various backgrounds have bonuses related to coin and gear, plus faction in some cases.
