The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise seemingly started on June 23, 1991 with Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis & Mega Drive. This is undoubtedly the very first Sonic GAME, but as it turns out... it's not the first SONIC game.

Before the blue blur's debut, Sonic's character design could be seen in numerous other Sega games. There's the Sega TeraDrive's Puzzle Construction, The Adventures of Quik & Silva on the Commodore Amiga, and most notably, Rad Mobile, a Sega Arcade game where Sonic appeared as a hood ornament.

There's also the Sonic the Hedgehog Promo Comic, which probably isn't canon, but it did release before the first game, making it the first appearance of much of Sonic's iconography. Here you can see Green Hill Zone's popular checkerboard pattern, glimpses of Spring Yard Zone, Labyrinth Zone, and Starlight Zone, as well as Sonic's animal buddies.

Speaking of animal buddies, did you know the little bird, can also be seen in their own game from 1984? It's Flicky! This classic Sega Arcade game is surprisingly addictive and deceptively easy.
