“The Why Behind Everyday Technologies”: A pedagogy to develop technological wisdom as a method to Increase Well-Being In Youth Technology Interaction

In this showcase, we present our ongoing work developing and teaching a curriculum for teens that aims to support them in developing ‘technological wisdom’ around contemporary technological issues. This, we propose, will ultimately change youth’s relationship with said technologies, and positively impact their overall wellbeing.

We will share: (1) the motivation and underlying theories we employed in developing a course that scaffolds youth technological wisdom, and (2) the pedagogy we developed to elicit youth’s ethical imaginaries. This course centers relational reasoning, echoing the call to center youth’s learning in relationships and opportunities, to elicit the moral imaginaries of youth about technologies they use in their everyday lives, and urges them to consider the deeper ethical implications such technologies may have on themselves and their communities. Our hope is that by doing so, we will aid in developing our student’s sense of agency and self efficacy, thereby contributing to their overall wellbeing.
