Thexder [テグザー] Game Sample -- PC-98
Thexder was a very popular oldie of the day made on a variety of platforms (mostly different computers though) and was first developed released in 1985. It has gone on to enjoy a healthy cult status even 25 years later, though I can't say much about it as I hadn't grown up with the title (heard of it long ago) and it holds little nostalgic value.
In (most versions of) the game, you play with a robot which can also morph into a plane, blasting strange mechanical misfits and alien creatures through 16 levels of mayhem. The trick isn't simply defeating enemies and going through the right corridors however; the game has a certain strategic aspect to it too. In the game, defending yourself requires Energy, which is also your health. You can't just fire your weapon recklessly nor can you spend too much time fighting enemies or destroying barricades to get to dead-ends with no rewards. However, defeating enemies can also increase your maximum Energy capacity, which means you'll have more endurance in the long haul. You have to find a balance if you want to get far in the game. Completing the final level makes the game start over again.
This is a brief sample of the first level. Enjoy.
