Quake for Sega Saturn was handled by ID Software and Lobotomy (who handled the Saturn versions of Duke Nukem 3D and Powerslave) and use's Lobotomy's own slavedriver engine instead of the original engine Quake used, to pretty good effect too. It was retooled to take advantage of the Sega Saturn's complex architecture instead of just being a downgraded straight port and is an id Software title done well on the system.

The game features many of the secrets and levels of the hit PC game (while its missing some, it also has some exclusive Saturn levels and secrets). The game runs at a higher and more consistent framerate than the Saturn version of Doom (which is a testament to the Saturn's abilities, but also ironic since the game is more sophisticated than Doom and better looking to boot). The soundtrack is decent and the visuals are great.

The game was originally meant to be something quite different than what it is now, which is basically Doom with a different setting, but is cool nonetheless. In the game, you're an unnamed hero who is travelling through different dimensions in search of a deadly threat code-named "Quake", which has manipulated time-space travel to send deadly enemies throughout the universe, to test the fighting capabilities of humanity. As such, you'll travel through various slipgates to different locations, killing baddies and racking up deadly weapons to take down even meaner foes. This game was rated "T" for Teen, which is said to be the only version to not have an "M" rating, which is even more ironic since the N64 would also recieve a rendition of Quake.

This video goes through the first level. Enjoy.
