This week, I 'ave been mostly playin' They Bleed Pixels. Released in 2012, a fun (if fiendishly-difficult) precision-platformer with decent combat, it still holds up a decade later. I was looking through my library, checking achievement stuff, and realised the devs added two more levels since I last played in, uh... 2013. So I've been brushing up on my skills by going through earlier stages and cleaning out all the earlier achievements. And whilst this game has manageable par-times (listed with each level), I figured it'd be worth sharing these for those interested.
Today is the last video I'll put up for They Bleed Pixels, barring further boredom (like uploading an edited video of the S-Rank for All Hallows' Eve...), and showcases the five bonus levels for the game, added after the game's initial release and shown in their release order. Three are guest-developer levels:
• Seraphs Bleed Star Dust
• They Bleed Ponycorns!
• exp. 0.666...
...whilst the other two are in-house bonus levels:
• All Hallows' Eve
• Winter's End
Being bonus levels, the themes vary a fair bit compared to the main game, from space to scribbles and Hallowe'en to winter (shocker there, I'm sure!), as does the difficulty.
• Seraphs is a nice intro to the bonus levels, with a par-time one could beat whilst still full-clearing the level. I learnt this from experience, and as such decided to PROPERLY speed-run the level (why I didn't do it before? I got the achievement in 2012 when I first played the game 😅). This one is based on a Golden Gear Games title, "Seraph", for iOS
• Ponycorns is a frankly-blinding pastel landscape with strange music and visuals to match. A great level if you like seeing lemons get juiced. This one's based on an Untold Entertainment game, titled "Sissy's Magical Ponycorn Adventure", also on iOS
• exp. 0.666... (proper title) is easily the toughest platforming level in the DLC pack, and possibly the whole game if Steam's achievements are to be believed. Put together by MK-ULTRA Games' lead dev, this one dials back the combat requirements in favour of tight platforming, the likes of which might frustrate if one wanted to no-death clear it. Based on a now-defunct publication titled "exp. 'zine"
• All Hallows' Eve is the first of the in-house bonus-levels, and tasks the player with a trick-or-treating challenge: collect as much candy as you can on the way to the exit. This level is decidedly easier to speed-run than it is to full-clear, and FAR easier than the S-Rank, which requires a grand total of 24,000 points to collect. I recommend checking out a video of this level's S-Rank clear, because it requires a LOT of extended combo-juggles as well as collecting plenty of the sweets lying around
• Winter's End is the second in-house bonus level, and the last (as of writing) DLC stage in the game. This level could probably be considered the toughest stage in the game when taking platforming and combat into account, as plenty of the blood-flakes (the collectibles of the stage) require a decent handle on both skills to collect, with the final one (if one were to ignore a particular bomb-imp) easily being the fiddliest wall-climb section in the game. The score requirement is no slouch either, with 11,000 points needed for an S-Rank clear. As a speed-run level however, it's not too shabby; some speed-bumps on the way there, but otherwise nothing a seasoned player can't handle.
This description got away from me, but as it is, I felt the levels needed describing considering their main connecting thread doesn't do the levels proper justice. Hopefully there won't be frame-rate stutters either - sit back and enjoy!
