Do NOT Bring This Cat Home is a psychological horror visual novel that subjects the player to an abusive relationship with a cute homeless "cat". With 40 different endings, the game is UNRELENTING in the visceral torture it gives to players. However, one ending can be obtained, called the TRUE ending, which ends the entire game positively by being able to leave the "cat" finally. The main character is a lonely individual living in a modest apartment. One bedroom, one bathroom, and one them living all alone in it. Then, they encounter the "cat", purring all alone and abandoned in an alleyway. The player can choose to adopt the "cat". However, any decision made lacked autonomy. They are subjected to immense physical and emotional torture whether they stay with the "cat" or try to leave it. Buckle up because this game will bring you on a wild emotional ride! This game gave me similar vibes to OMORI. Its message is heavy, hinting about abuse, trauma and depression. What seemed to be an innocent cute kitty, is an eldritch being in disguise, wanting to gain my trust. And even if I stopped trusting it, it controlled me like a puppet. It manipulated me for its own entertainment and it seemed impossible to escape from it. The more I played, the more distressed I got. Although I feel the being is also lonely as the main character, I shouldn't pity it. It will simply be enabled to continue its love bombing and cycle of abuse. And when I got the TRUE ending where I left that entity, I felt very happy for the main character!
While it was not my first time revealing about my personal life on streams, this game opened up some wounds. I am ultimately happy I have played the game and I think it's an excellent game for those who could withstand the resurfacing of their own traumas. It is a masterful piece of art in showing the nature of abusive relationships. It also instils a sense of triumph in overcoming such a relationship in the TRUE ending, which makes it all the more inspiring. This game is DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED if you like psychological horror!
