Star Fox for the Atari 2600 - released in 1983. A simple Defender clone that never seems to have more than one enemy on the screen at a time. I'm guessing this is how they got around the crazy flicker that Defender had to deal with having so many sprites on screen.

The programmer also made Sorcerer and Fire Fly - both of which use the same smiley face and life icon at the top of the screen. This one makes me want to play the NES Star Fox.
