This is why Odin is jealous of Loki in God of War Ragnarök
God of War Ragnarök Director Eric Williams explains why Odin envies Atreus. The young god can instantly translate the ancient languages that have puzzled Odin for several lifetimes.
In pursuit of his obsession, Odin becomes an absent father. Instead of learning from his mistakes, Odin chooses to weaponize his absence. He withholds his love and affection from his family in order to manipulate them into loyalty. The Asgardians are constantly competing for the All-Father's attention and thus never think to question his brutality.
Eric Williams explains that this is analogous to how people hurt their families in real life, whether knowingly or unknowingly, by withholding affection. Even Kratos was on a path to becoming an absent father in God of War 2018. Kratos was scared and afraid that his anger, rage, and past brutality would somehow taint his son and curse him to live a life of bloodshed and vengeance, just as he had done in Greece. This is why Kratos avoided spending time with his son as much as he could until his wife's death.
In contrast to Odin, Kratos' love for his son led him to eventually open his heart to him. At the end of God of War 2018, he finally began giving his son the approval and affection he needed to grow into a good person.
The sons of Odin were not that fortunate. He manipulated both Baldur and Thor into becoming killers. Thor adopted the legacy of abuse and, through physical punishment, turned his own sons, Magni and Modi, into cruel gods.
Odin feeds on this power and feels that he is all-powerful and all-knowing, able to do anything he wants with no consequences. However, despite his near-omnipotence in the Norse pantheon, Odin is unable to translate some words carved into a simple wooden mask. When Atreus arrives and effortlessly reads the runes, Odin feels jealousy for the first time in his immortal life.
Odin has so much hubris that he makes a grave mistake. He thinks he can manipulate Atreus too. But what Odin doesn't know is that Kratos, through love and affection, has turned his son into a strong person capable of seeing through such abusive tactics. This moment of hubris leads to Odin's eventual downfall.
