This is why Kratos has to earn the right in God of War Ragnarök
God of War Ragnarök Director Eric Williams explains why Kratos could not pet the Wolf pups that he and Atreus had raised after freeing them from Raiders. Kratos can only pet the wolves (Speki, Svanna, Fenrir) after completing certain tasks to earn the ability.
Eric Williams explained that this was designed to reward the players. The simple act of petting the wolves has a story and motivation behind it, and the player can gradually see how and why Kratos eventually pets them. Kratos spent the majority of God of War 2018 unable to give his son a simple hug or even a pat on the shoulder. Similarly, it takes some time and effort for him to eventually pet the wolves.
In the case of Speki and Svanna, Kratos must first destroy the Raider camps where the two wolves were imprisoned when they were puppies. Once Kratos clears the camps, he comforts the wolves and tells them not to be afraid. In the case of Fenrir, Kratos can only pet him after completing the game and then visiting Jotunheim to speak with Angrboda, the large doggo's new caretaker.
In contrast to this measured approach, many video games opt for instant gratification. This approach can also be fun, but the gratifying moments pass quickly and must be replaced by something else soon.
In addition, Eric Williams mentions that there are still some undiscovered secrets in the post-game. The community has already found Tyr wandering the realms, leading to fan speculation about what this means and if there will be new pantheons for Kratos and Atreus to explore, perhaps to aid in the search for the missing giants of Jotunheim. There is also speculation that Sindri will attempt to find his brother Brok's missing soul piece.
