Those WEREN'T Rocks In the Desert! They're-! - NieR Automata
Yep. Just like I said, those weren't rocks after all.
What are they?
They're Emil. They're a goddamn bunch of ENORMOUS Emil heads!
What are the doing in the desert? THAT... I honestly have no clue, storywise. I know Emil is a character in NieR, and that even before he merged with his sister into that monster form, he was basically immortal to time and was already 1,400 years old when we meet him. But why are they in the desert specifically? Who knows!
Also were all those flashbacks I edited in really necessary for this? No, absolutely not. Would've saved me HOURS of time to have not edited them in (because I had to keep saving and re-editing, and re-saving, and re-editing). But Emil is one of my favorite characters in NieR, and I understand that a bunch of people watching this very possibly haven't played a NieR game, or that people who've played Automata didn't actually play the first NieR and don't know much about Emil's backstory. You meet him quite a bit before the point where he gets transformed, but this shows you how he came to have that face and the events involving him beyond that. I definitely like what the scenes add to this, because they're pretty damn emotional.
You should play NieR: Gestalt. Seriously.
Also I have those scenes a bit edited to cover when the main character's name is shown, because you can pick the name yourself, but canonically the main character's name is Nier. He was the man who Emil and Kaine looked up to very much.
Also if that book looks familiar to you, then you're right! You sharp know-it-all, you. When you get the DLC for Automata (which auto came with the game), you get a few pod skins to bick from. I saw Grimoire Weiss and said "That's my pod skin for life".
So it's my pod skin for life.
Fits too, because your pod in Automata functions pretty much exactly the same as Weiss in Gestalt. He shoots rapidly and has a special attack, just how pods have Pod Programs. From memory, the Spear program is like Dark Execution from Gestalt, and Hammer is like Dark Hand, and Laser would essentially be like Dark Lance, and Mirage like Dark Phantasm, and Blade like... I forget the name of the short-range damaging barrier sealed verse from Gestalt that never really saw any use.
There's another interesting fact about what Emil is, and that fact would be... WHAT Emil is. I'm not talking about what was revealed in these scenes. No. I mean... THIS fact would actually be a huge spoiler. I won't mention it just yet, but it's a doozy.
Also, Devola and Popola... those two are my favorite characters. It's so tragic. When you actually get the full perspective, THEY were the good guys - androids programmed to protect and preserve humanity, and they were cut down for doing that job. And their Song of the Ancients - any version... good stuff.
Oh, also, I... took a picture of the oasis or something, I guess.
