Football was coming home, it was inevitable, Baddiel and Skinner had even wrote a song about it, so it was going to happen. The English side got drunk in Hong Kong before the tournament but moments such as Paul Gascoigne’s wonder strike against Scotland and Stuart Pearce’s redemption in a quarter final shootout had won the fans over. The semi-final against Germany was a moment that defined a decade for the English. Meanwhile, Germany were attempting to get over the shock defeat from the Euro 92 by Denmark. Also, Croatia were at their first tournament as an independent state, Bulgaria looked to push on from a surprising World Cup and the new generations of Spain and Portugal were dark horses.
