Thunder Helix is upcoming game that could easily be mistaken for a long lost early 90s flight sim. Developed by a single man - David "Hidden Asbestos" Walters, the game takes inspiration from classics such as Desert Strike, LHX Attack Chopper and Gunship 2000.
It's planned for release on Steam in late March (to be confirmed) as an Early Access title. Currently it has single campaign and a free flight single mission. More content will be added in throughout the Early Access period, but in current state it's highly playable already, with 3 different helicopters types - attack, utility and scout, with their own weaknesses and strenghts.
The winch system presents some interesting mechanics, as it's not only used to pick up ammo, fuel and personnel, but you can experiment with other objects as well (camels included).
The game supports multiple control types - keyboard, keyboard + mouse, gamepad and even HOTAS setups. I've been playing the game with a flight stick in this presentation.
If you loved 90s gaming, be sure to check this game out - it's really fun and easy to pick up (and hard to master). It has my seal of approval.
Note that the game is still work in progress at this point, with the developer constantly fixing bugs and adding new features.
