[雷撃/Thunder Striker] Hard Mode Stage 2-2 (Score: 298,800)
I honestly thought it's shoddily made before I bought it, but after playing it, it's no doubt surprisingly pretty dope. I like it!
Thunder Striker, or Raigeki (My gut is saying this is a spoof to Raiden but Raigeki is actually a real word. Remember the Raigeki card from Yugioh?) is a vert shmup with Game Boy dressing. The game did a great job mimicking the technology and aesthetics of such games, though just turn off the filter? It hurts my eyes. Gameplay-wise... to be honest it's your run-of-the-mill Toaplan formula shmup, complete with bombs and selectable weapons...
While it does lack innovation, it does execute things well in stage design department, which in the end the very thing that decides if a game is enjoyable or not! You can shoot and bomb. You can choose between 2 main shots and 3 sub-shots. On Hard Mode the weapon options are surprisingly distinct! Though I don't recommend the laser sub-shot. You need coverage and it's quite a narrow sub-shot.
The unique thing to note is how abundant the bombs are and how the game doesn't fully punish dying with full bombs! Well, there are more caveats than that, but it must be noted that the main shot item cycles between the vulcan shot, laser shot and yes, BOMB! So you're incentivized to strategically choose between upgrading (back) or hoard bombs ahead! Also when you die the bomb stock won't RESET. While at it you will also be given 3 more bombs! Yay!
However the awful thing is... I swear there is a deliberate bomb delay! Worse than SDOJ's! You must bomb really ahead to safe yourself! Also the bomb itself doesn't give much DPS, so it's mainly defensive! You can't really use the bomb to quickly skip patterns!
For extends, this game has it, but it's not based on score, but by revealing them out. There are 5 of them in total on each stage. Shoot the hidden item and it'll get revealed. This game is surprisingly tough especially in Hard Mode. Remember them well!
Stage design-wise, while it's solid in both variety and pacing, it would be nice to have warnings for bottom or side-screen enemies! Especially the behind boats in stage 2. There is no bullet sealing, so quick dispatch is too risky.
And... that's all. The game features practice too, which is much appreciated! But no button configs and no replays. No options too. Would be nice to be able to reconfigure the buttons! The game also features 2nd Loop. This run is a 1-ALL, so I don't know what's beyond the 2nd Loop aside of new counter-bullets. For those who aim to clear the 2nd loop, please be very wary that the extend containers will shoot counter bullets at you!
Not a quintessential shmup, but it is entertaining, nonetheless. I can confidently say you can't go wrong with this game!
