So we're continuing the OG movie storyline, leading up to the Battle at Endor (TIE Fighter the game has some overlap with the game X-Wing Alliance - TIE Fighter and its expansions span the events between the Rebel base battle on Hoth and the Battle at Endor).

Now I'm in a TIE Advanced. Nice to take a break from the Missile Boat. But I would have preferred a Defender. No tractor beam either. So far, I've only flown one mission with a jammer. I much prefer a tractor beam, though - it's great for freezing targets from behind to zero in and fire missiles before a full lock - or even fire a torpedo or rocket at a starfighter because I'm out of missiles.

The first mission went well enough. More Corvettes with one turret serving as a missile launcher - so I attacked them from that side.

The second mission, not so much... in the first attempt I allowed the prisoner transport to be disabled, and after I destroyed the Assault Shuttle trying to dock with it, Rebel ships outright destroyed the prisoner ship. Brutal. In the second attempt, I succeeded in fending off the Rebels but dared to take out the missile launcher on the frigate and got killed. My mistake. In the third attempt, the prisoner transport got disabled, so an extra transport launched from the Garret, docked with the prisoner transport, flew back to the Garret, and... nothing happened? I thought the transport would repair the prisoner transport, or the transport might have picked up the prisoners. But the mission didn't change at all. Might be a mission trigger bug. That was a waste of time. Then a bunch of A-Wings showed up and destroyed it. It was interesting that another assault transport launched from the Dargon after it took some damage and was helping in the fight, though.

In the final attempt, I made better use of my wingmen and told them to ignore the frigate so they wouldn't get killed. Sometimes using wingmen is tricky. If they are engaged in dogfights with missile enemies, and I tell them to go attack something far away, the missile enemies will get a lock while chasing them and shoot them down. If I have enemies on me and need to attack something else some distance away, I'll tell my wingmen to cover me. Sometimes, they are able to kill what is chasing me, as long as we aren't flying in circles. If I'm flying in circles a lot, I'm usually not concerned with missile enemies unless they are approaching from a distance - at that point I'll try to fire missiles at them, shoot theirs down and see if I can take them out with lasers as they approach, then depend on the circling avoidance or wingmen. Other times, wingmen are just stupid and attack something that can easily kill them, like a frigate with an Advanced Missile Launcher, like in this mission... so I have to tell them to ignore it because they aren't smart enough to take out the launcher first. If I know my wingmen have missile enemies chasing them, I'll sometimes try to shoot them down, which is easier because they are flying in a straight line while my wingmen pursue their targets.

Oh, and one other strategy I'll use sometimes - if I have missile enemies closing in on me, I'll get a light lock with a missile, fire, and turn away. The enemy will continue pursuing me while the missile hits them in the face. If I were to continue going towards them, they might get into laser range and start firing, inadvertently shooting my missile down. Enemies in TIE Fighter are never smart enough to shoot down missiles, but capital ships will do so in X-Wing Alliance. Very annoying.

So the Rebels captured some freighter with clearance codes, eh?
