Time Trial Mission Tutorial - BeamNG.drive
Have you ever wondered how the mission editor system works? I did, now I can show you how to make your own time trial with it.
This is the first video in a series that I am making in the hope to educate you on how to make a mission in (hopefully) all mission types. I will keep them brief and logically to the point. I can fill in any gaps that you may see in the comments section, so feel free to ask anything below.
1. Find a spot
2. Create a new mission in the mission editor
3. Name your mission and select the timetrial Missiontype
4. Place the mission start trigger
Resize with the scale field if you wish
6. Make the racepath
Place the pathnodes to mark where you want checkpoints to be
Shift-drag in the direction that you want the checkpoint to flow
Segments join the pathnodes to define the route. They are placed automatically.
For a circuit track, you need to add in the last segment to complete the course. Connect the last node to the first node.
For closed circuit time trials, leave the end node as 'Missing!' otherwise select the pathnode the you want to be the finish line.
7. Add the start positions
8. Save in the mission folder. gameplay/missions/*levelname*/timeTrial/*missionname* as 'race'
make the base prefab, this will contain non-directional obstacles
9. Build the base prefab. Open the asset browser to access more objects
You can click 'saved filter' and then 'all models' to see the main availible statics
Find the object you want and double click to spawn it
Use number keys 1-4 to help with moving, hold shift and move a static to duplicate it and hold control when rotating to be more precise
10. When you are happy with the placement of your obstacles, select the top static of your list in the scene tree and then click the folder with a plus at the top to add a new sim group
11. Add all the statics to the sim group
12. Right click on the sim group and click pack prefab
13. Navigate to your mission folder again and save it there with the name 'prefab'
do the same for the forward and reverse config for our time trial (arrows or directional markings to aid the player with the correct direction. This and the base prefab are optional to add.)
The naming is case sensitive so remember to check the mission editor checklist to ensure it is spelt correctly
Once a prefab has been packed, it can be deleted from the level if it is in the way, packing it is saving it independantly from the editor.
14. Click the 'Career' tab and ensure that 'show in freeroam' is ticked
Remember to save frequently!
