A combination of human and technical failure brought daily life to a standstill in the wider vicinity of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. While 25 years later nature has taken possession of the area, the world is still taking stock of the nuclear disaster in reactor 4.
Even before things went wrong at the plant on the saturday, April 26, 1986, the type of reactor used was known as unsafe and dangerous. Only the Soviet Union took the risks for granted.
When reactor 4 of the nuclear power plant has to be de commissioned for routine maintenance, the day shift considers it a good time to test the electricity supply of the cooling system. The emergency cooling system is already switched off.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, they have to postpone the test and the evening shift will work with it unprepared. The operator almost shuts down the reactor due to an operating error.
