The adventure begins...

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is revered by millions around the world. It brought a third dimension to what was already one of the most adventurous popular video game series in existence at the time. It provided a golden foundation upon which the series would build its next two decades of installments. It is, without question, the most respected video game in existence, and it starts with this theme.

This piece is perhaps just as loved as the game in which it originates, and while I am admittedly not the biggest fan of Ocarina of Time (I said it), I cannot deny how brilliantly presented this piece is. As I'd mentioned, this game was and is adventurous. It took the sense of freedom and exploration that Shigeru Miyamoto aimed to capture in The Legend of Zelda and amplified it in a way that simply wasn't possible before. This installment hosts landscapes that at the time must have seemed boundless, and despite the sweeping shots of this scenery present when the game is booted up, this music that accompanies those cinematic is comparably restrained and melancholic. That's why I love this song so much. It does not encapsulate the grandeur of 3D video games, nor the adventurous nature of The Legend of Zelda. Rather, it conveys somewhat subtly the sadness of the game's story, and the stories that would continue to form the series' timeline throughout future installments.

With all that said, it was immediately clear to me that I had no desire to make significant fundamental changes to this piece. I started by replacing the synthetic strings with an accordion, and while I aimed to record the lead on an ocarina, mine is personally quite difficult to keep in tune (or perhaps I'm simply not good at playing it). I did opt to add a solo piano section after the first loop, which becomes accented by the accordion. I ended this section and led back into the full instrumentation via four bars of chords not present in the original piece. I added some piano in the waning seconds of the recording in order to facilitate a buildup, and that's about it.

I hope that you all enjoy this one! As always, thank you so much for listening.
