The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is one of my favorite installments in its franchise, despite its general unpopularity and commonly-expressed flaws. I enjoy the game, however, thanks to its unique dungeons and locations, its quirky characters, items, and mechanics, and of course, the game's beautiful music.

Bamboo Island is a small island floating among the clouds that surround Skyloft. Players who are looking solely to progress the game's story could very easily miss out on visiting the location and, henceforth, hearing this tranquil piece of music. I was lucky enough to happen upon this island, and upon entering its sole structure, was greeted with a very quaint room, filled with bamboo. This theme accompanies that room, and despite its insignificance in the game's story, gives the optional island such a unique identity. The piece is heavy, with its low, beating drum and full-sounding chords, but the theme gives itself just enough space in order to bring such a soothing and relaxing feeling. My roommate, the guitarist in this video, has been playing the game for his first time, and felt the same way almost immediately upon hearing this theme, and it was at his request that we covered this piece.

Bamboo Island has such a unique texture of timbres that I didn't want to change much. I did replace the very distant steel drums of the original track with a guzheng, solely because I've yet to find a decent sounding steel drum sound. I would have also loved to replicate the expressive bends of the original's lead flute, but there's only so much that I'm capable of doing with a modern flute, and I'm happy with how it turned out, especially the the flute harmonies come in.
