TOCA 3: World Touring Cars on the PlayStation 1 delivers on an enjoyable racing experience, with its extensive vehicle lineup, featuring over 40 real-world touring cars, each meticulously modeled, boasting an impressive, dynamic damage model that adds an extra layer of authenticity to the gameplay.
The game offers a range of gameplay modes such as a championship mode, free race, time trial, quick race and multiplayer. It also features a decent arcade like physics engine. Handling feels demanding but somewhat rewarding. AI opponents too, provide a decent challenge, and commit mistakes just like a real player.
Visually, it ain't the most beautiful racer on the console, but it's certainly one of its most demanding and technologically advanced. The tracks are well designed, the environments and skybox look good, and each can be played under different weather condition, as well as during the day, at sunset and night time. The draw distance leaves a bit to be desired.
Vehicles boasting a modeled interior when playing in third person, and superb cockpit views in first person, and their absurdly advanced, dynamic damage model, blows every other game on the system out of the water.
It's clear the game is pushing way beyond what the system was meant to do, which results in framerates that drop below 17 fps at times.
