TOCA Series
0TOCA, also known as TOCA Race Driver, is a racing game series developed and published by Codemasters. Initially, the series focused on touring car racing, particularly the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), offering players an immersive experience in competitive circuit racing. This was complemented by pre- and post-race commentary from former touring car driver and television presenter Tiff Needell.
Following the release of TOCA 2 Touring Cars, the series moved away from its BTCC focus, shifting to a global motorsport perspective with World Touring Cars, which expanded the franchise to include a broader range of racing disciplines and gameplay variety.
The TOCA series also made the jump to handheld gaming in 2000 with the Game Boy Color release of TOCA Touring Car Championship. Subsequent entries in the franchise appeared on the Game Boy Advance and PSP, bringing the racing experience to portable platforms.
Over time, the series evolved and was succeeded by the TOCA Race Driver series, which introduced a story element to the franchise. This new iteration saw three main entries, culminating in Race Driver 3 in 2006. However, this was not the final entry in the TOCA/Race Driver series—TOCA Race Driver 3 Challenge, released for the PSP in 2007, marked the last official instalment.
Although the TOCA/Race Driver series ended in 2007, its legacy continued with a new direction. In 2008, Codemasters launched Race Driver: Grid—more commonly known as Grid—which shifted towards a more cinematic and dynamic racing experience. While TOCA laid the foundation for realistic racing simulation, Grid introduced new mechanics and a fresh approach to motorsport gaming. The Grid series remains active as of 2022, with its latest instalment, Grid Legends, released across multiple platforms, including iOS and Android, in 2024. #motorsport #racing #gaming
