On this day in history, a wild storm blew a European explorer’s ship far off course, and caused him to come ashore in a strange and distant land. Today in 1543, the Portuguese trader and explorer António Mota became the first recorded European to set foot in Japan. Mota was conducting trade along the coast of China when a storm blew him off course and caused him to land on the Japanese island of Tanegashima. Mota and his partner Francisco Zeimoto traded with the Japanese while they waited for their ship to be repaired, and notably introduced Japan to its first matchlock muskets, weapons that would quickly become a vital part of the ongoing wars between the samurai clans in the Sengoku era.
