Toki (Lynx) Playthrough
A playthrough of Atari's 1992 action-platformer for the Atari Lynx, Toki.
The Lynx adaptation of TAD's Toki (JuJu伝説 in Japan), a popular 1989 arcade hop'n'bopper starring a man-turned-monkey who's on a quest to save his girlfriend from a witch doctor, was one of three contemporary "ports" released for dedicated game machines. Taito's NES version ( • Toki (NES) Playthrough ) was first, and the Lynx and Sega Genesis games showed up the following year.
The NES game was an excellent 8-bit replica of the arcade game, and the Genesis version was an equally excellent reimagining, but if you wanted something that brought the true arcade experience home, you wanted Toki on the Lynx.
This version, developed by Atari themselves, does justice to the arcade game, and it's a testament to the capabilities of the Lynx. The graphics are vivid, the framerate is smooth, the soundtrack is good enough to pass for something you'd hear on the TG16 (!!), the controls are spot-on, and the challenge was well preserved. One hit kills, baby! Yeah!
It's the whole Toki experience, meticulously recreated for a cinder block of a handheld. Had Atari focused on quality like this more often, just imagine what might've been!
