Today, we mostly all think that the elephant holds the title of the largest creature that ever existed on land. But if we go back into history, we would find much larger creatures. Dinosaurs are of one of many such majestic creatures.
Many of the dinosaurs from millions of years ago were longer and more gigantic than modern elephants. The largest dinosaurs of that era were Sauropods, a collection of four-legged herbivorous creatures with long necks and tails. Their remains have been found on almost every continent, pointing to their booming population at that time.
So in lieu of that, we bring you a list of the top ten largest dinosaurs that ever lived.
Without much ado, let’s dive right in.
Number 10: The Quetzalcoatlus
The Quetzalcoatlus dominated the skies of North America at the end of the dinosaur age and flew high over famous creatures such as Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops. As tall as a giraffe, the biggest of the Quetzalcoatlus species also happened to be the largest of all flying creatures at that time.
As a matter of fact, the biggest remains of this flying reptile was found to be around 15 feet in length, and the creature would have weighed about 500 pounds. When on land, scientists believe the creature would walk on all four limbs by folding down its wings and using them as front limbs. And like all flying reptiles, they launched off the ground on a four-legged leap.
Though small compared to its body, the Quetzalcoatlus's torso was very dense and packed with huge muscles. A single leap could get one of these giants into the air, and it needed just a few flaps to keep it aloft.
They could likely travel non-stop for 16,000 kilometers after launching, only rarely flapping to keep themselves in the air and steer their path. Their short wings were incredibly thicker and densely-packed with muscle fibers with which it kept its lifestyle going.
Number 9: The Gigantoraptor
Despite having a name that does surely inspire nightmares, the gigantoraptor isn't a raptor in the surface sense of it. They lived near the end of the Cretaceous period and are estimated to have been more than 16 feet tall and to have weighed nearly two tons.
Based on those measurements and its sharp claws, one might assume that this big creature wreaked havoc on its fellow dinosaurs or other smaller animals. But this has been proven to not be the case as its jaw's remains indicate that it actually had no teeth. Perhaps their sharp claws were used to reap fruits from trees.
This beaked dinosaur is said to have belonged to the oviraptorosauria family - a grouping of small, feathered beasts weighing just about a few pounds.
From the only fossil of the beast which was discovered by paleontologists in Inner Mongolia (China), some paleontologists are of the opinion that the creature was partly covered with ornamental feathers on either its neck or tail.
With the absence of teeth, it remains a mystery what the Gigantoraptor consumed for survival.
Number eight: Titanoceratops
This is another massive dinosaur that existed during the late Cretaceous period and is one of the biggest horned dinosaurs that ever lived. The titanic horn face beast weighed approximately 15,000 pounds and measured roughly 22.3 feet from head to tail.
There are insinuations that its massive 8-foot head probably makes it the land animal with the longest and most extended skull that ever lived. Titanoceratops lived in the American Southwest about 74 million years ago, and were distinguishable by their thin frill, pointed nose, and big horns.
Despite being a non-aggressive or carnivorous creature, fully-developed Titanoceratops didn’t have to worry so much about attacks because of their threatening skull size. Large predators at that time preyed on young Titanoceratops.
Studies have shown that these giant creatures inhabited North American regions and reproduced by laying eggs. It wouldn’t be farfetched to say that prehistoric Homo sapiens would surely have stolen a few of those massive eggs to make omelets.
Number seven: Magnapaulia
When you think of enormous creatures, a duck wouldn’t likely be the first to surface on your mind – nor the hundredth. Well, meet the Magnapaulia - a platypus-looking dinosaur that'll make you think twice about all duck-billed creatures.
They are reported to have lived during the late Cretaceous period, measured roughly around 50 feet long, and weighed up to 25 tons. Even with its large physical size, scientists are of the opinion that the Magnapaulia was a swimmer, due to the high neural spines on its vertebrae.
