Crocodiles can never be shelved when talking about ferocious beasts. For millions of years and even during the dinosaur era, they were known throughout the land as man-eaters.

But while many people are well-informed about the terrifying nature of these hypercarnivores, only a few can see beyond the story of their true size. So, today, we're going to look at the top ten largest crocodiles in the world.

With that said, let's get on with it already.

Number 10: The Tawi-Tawi Crocodile

This crocodile hails from the Tawi-Tawi island in the Philippines and it measures 16.11 feet after a group of local fishermen captured it on Friday, September 8, 2017. With that size, this creature is equivalent to three-fifths of a London bus!

According to one of the reports, a fisherman had first sighted the creature a day before, thinking it a wooden log. But when he moved a little bit closer to know for sure, the animal moved. Without delay, he reported the incident to other fishermen who, along with the government alligator rescue team in the area, launched a full-scale croc-hunt to seek the creature. But not without a fight.

In the attempt to grab hold of the giant croc alive, several fishing nets were damaged, and even a boat was destroyed as the rampaging crocodile tried to wriggle out of the water. Although nobody was harmed, and the crocodile itself went unhurt as per the municipal conservation law in the Philippines, which prohibits anyone from killing a crocodile.

But while you think that this crocodile is a total maniac in your own right, remember it's just the smallest on our list.

Number 9: The Pointe-Noire Crocodile

This unnamed crocodile was initially claimed to have been found swimming on the streets in New Orleans during the devastating flood from the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. And has also claimed, it measured more than 20 feet and weighed about 4,500 pounds. But while this crocodile stands amidst multiple hoaxes, we will like to clear some doubts.

Indeed, this picture shows a crocodile that was captured and killed. However, the killing wasn't done anywhere near New Orleans, not even in the same part of the world. But rather on a beach at Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo on July 3, 2003, with vital statistics that fell short of the acclaimed numbers.

The original report of the massive crocodile measured only a bit more than 16 feet, which makes it comparable to our first entry on the list. And judging from its size, it probably was masculine because male crocodiles are considerably larger than the females. Though the crocodile isn't big enough to be the largest in the world, it'll surely do as the number 9 entry on this list.

Number 8: Gomek

Gomek was a saltwater crocodile -- a species that was considered super dangerous to people who shared the same environment with them and was widely hunted for their skin in the 1970s.

But luckily for Gomek, he was purchased by Terri and Arthur Jones from the croc-hunter, George Craig, who captured him in Papua New Guinea, 1985 before he was finally sold to the Saint Augustine Alligator Farm in Florida. He stood in the park for almost 8 years, where he grew up to 17.8 feet and weighed nearly 2,000 pounds before his death on May 6, 1997.

However, before his death, which was diagnosed to be a heart attack, Gomek was considered to be lovable in general. Many people who got the chance to meet him could even move as close as 1 meter to feed him -- an act that could turn anyone to a delicious snack with any other type of crocodile, particularly if they'd amassed up to Gomek's size and weight. Without saying much, he's been categorized as one of the tamest crocodiles that have ever existed in captivity.

Number 7: Cassius

Formerly recognized by the Guinness book of record as the world's largest crocodile in captivity in 2011, Cassius measures 17.11 feet and weighs over a ton - a size which, when brought on a practical scale, is equivalent to that of two ping-pong tables placed side by side.

Cassius was a saltwater crocodile first captured in 1987 in the Finis River located in northern Australia before he was moved to the Marineland Melanesia Wildlife park, also in Australia. But that's after he was causing a nuisance in the river with several records of boat attacks. And because of his violent nature, Cassius was named after one of the greatest boxers of all time. And guess who that is...Mohammad Ali, whose original birth name was Cassius Clay.

Due to many vicious fights, Cassius no longer has his snout
