One fun aspect about many board games is that there's often multiple ways to go about winning. You can focus on economy, military, fast building, etc., and still earn points or the like. Today, I wanted to talk about games that allow you to bypass the 'main' way to win entirely - true alternates!

Abstract games are notorious for their mantra of "easy to learn, hard to master". A big part of this is often that you have a very clear, decisive goal with a major path to achieve it. Most Euro/bigger hobby games expand on this idea by having multiple paths to a single victory, i.e. different ways of earning Victory Points. Today's topic, though, is about games that bypass this concept completely. Instead of focusing on earning VPs altogether, you can do.... something else. Some specific goal, event, play, etc., that allows you to win in a way that's altogether aside from the "main game".
