Solving a game is a weird concept. Fundamentally it means that you can say who will win without anyone making a move. Does that remove the fun? What is this "perfect play" thing? Plus, there are a lot of implications for AI development included inside. Here are my favorite 5 games that fit in here!

I've talked a decent amount about AI training, board games being won and lost by programs vs. humans, and the idea of digitizing board games in general. Here, I wanted to talk about solved games. These are games that, though perfect play, have consistently predictable outcomes. Perfect play meaning that each player does the best thing for them at the time of the action. Humans generally cannot see this, even in relatively simple games, but AI and machines can, and have taken advantage of this by blowing humans out of the water in both board and video games.

Importantly, this brings up questions of enjoyment and mystery. Is is still fun to play a solved game, in the same way of thinking whether it's fun to see a magic trick when you know how it's performed.
