Hey guys, HDvee here! Starting off on your pokemon journey brings you with one of the hardest decisions you’ll have to face, which starter pokemon do you choose? For countless years, trainers have been deciding between fire, water and grass, but which starter pokemon is the best from all generations? Of course the whole point of the starter pokemon is to have the rock, paper, scissors effect, where fire beats grass, grass beats water and water beats fire, so there isn’t really a best starter pokemon unless you look into the competitive side of things, and still then you could say it’s all opinion. With all of that being said, today's video goes over my top 5 best starter pokemon, and of course, this is all my own opinion and preferences, with a little bit of competitive dust thrown in there. I’d also love to know your favourite starter pokemon! With all of that being said, this is my top 5 best starter pokemon, let’s get started!
Starting things off we have Mudkip. Getting a mega evolution in the ruby and sapphire remakes really boosted this starter pokemons claim to fame. Mega Swampert looks like a complete badass, but getting the ability swift swim really makes you regret not bringing your umbrella. This starter pokemon is a monster in the rain with it’s base attack stat of 150, and also pretty difficult to take down having only one weakness! Mudkip also has one of my favourite designs from the starter pokemon, how can you not love those little stars on it’s cheeks? For these reasons, Mudkip takes the number 5 spot for the best starter pokemon!
At number 4 we have Snivy. Getting access to an incredible hidden ability threw this starter pokemon’s third evolution serperior into the OU tier, and with good reason too. Contrary causes all effects that would lower a stat of the Pokémon with this Ability to increase it instead, and all effects that would increase a stat of the Pokémon with this Ability to decrease it instead. This also applies to self-inflicted changes, such as Curse and Leaf Storm. Having a base power of 130 means that Serperiors STAB leaf storm hits like a truck, and you do not want to be on the other side of those leaves. For this reason alone puts Snivy at number 4 on the list for the best starter pokemon!
At the halfway point we have Kanto’s fire starter pokemon, Charmander. Now this pokemon was always going to be the first pokemon that I picked when starting my journey, who wouldn’t want a little fire breathing lizard on their team? Not to mention that this starter pokemon’s third evolution charizard gets two mega evolutions, giving the pokemon a lot of diversity! This fan favourite also has an amazing design, it’s shiny form looks amazing and it also gets access to a pretty wide movepool! Don’t get me wrong, I love Bulbasaur and Squirtle, but Charmander always took the number one spot on the podium for me, I just fell in love with it from the get go! Because of all of this, charmander takes today’s 3rd place medal!
Coming in at number 2 we have Torchic. This generation three starter pokemon soon became a force to be reckoned with when it’s hidden ability came into the spotlight. Getting access to speed boost AND a mega evolution soon made torchic one of the best starter pokemon to choose from! Having a pretty nice movepool with a high attack and special attack stat also really helped out this starter pokemon enabling it to run as a physical or special pokemon. This shot Blaziken into the ubers tier for good reason, for all of these reasons, torchic takes 2nd place in today's video as the 2nd best starter pokemon!
Taking the number one spot for the best starter pokemon is Froakie. From a competitive standpoint, Froakie’s evolution line without a doubt is the strongest of the starter pokemon. Having a huge speed stat and attack stats when evolved into greninja means this pokemon is a pretty big threat, but what really makes this starter pokemon broken is protean. Immediately before using any move (except Struggle), a Pokémon with Protean as its Ability will change its type to be the same type as the move it is using. Protean always causes the user to become a single-type Pokémon. Because Protean activates prior to executing a move, the user will receive same-type attack bonus on every move it uses regardless of the move's type (except Struggle) and will always hit with the move Toxic.
