Cryptids are creatures, typically animals, that have been reported by a large number of people and observed in the wild. Cryptids are not mythical or fictional; they exist in nature but don't fit into our understanding of what is possible. Cryptozoology is the study of these entities.
Because there are so many different types of cryptids—from animals to plants to humanoids—there's no one way to define what a cryptid is. However, there are some general characteristics that almost all cryptids share:
They have been reported by multiple witnesses over time (though not always simultaneously).
They appear in areas where other similar creatures have also been sighted or seen before.
They display physical features that distinguish them from known species (even if those features differ slightly from place to place).
The most important evidence for cryptids is eyewitness accounts—people say they saw something, then people say they saw the same thing again. Eyewitness accounts are also important because they can be used as evidence that a cryptid exists by themselves. If you have one person saying he saw Bigfoot and another saying he didn't, then it's hard to tell which story is true without further evidence.
Eyewitness accounts alone aren't enough to prove a cryptid's existence; there needs to be more proof than this kind of bare-bones testimony or else we'd start taking every tale seriously as true. The second type of evidence that can help prove a creature's existence is something called "physical" evidence: photographs (pictures), videos (movies), DNA samples taken from animals' scat (poop), footprints left in mud or snow after an animal was there, hair samples found on trees where no one should have been standing at the time... all these things are considered physical proof when trying to determine whether or not something is real!
Cryptids are mysterious creatures that have been sighted from time to time. The evidence for the existence of most cryptids is anecdotal, and mostly consists of pictures, video footage or audio recordings. The case for the Loch Ness Monster, for example, relies on eyewitness accounts and a few photographs, one of which has been debunked as a hoax. Similarly, the existence of Bigfoot is based on eyewitness testimony and blurry photos.
There are two main types of evidence used in cryptozoology: physical evidence and testimonial evidence. Physical evidence includes things like tracks or hair samples; testimonial evidence is what people report they have seen or heard themselves. Many times these creatures have been reported by multiple (sometimes hundreds) of witnesses over many decades; those reports must be weighed against other possibilities such as misidentification with known animals (such as bears), hoaxes or mass hysteria (which can be triggered by group sightings).
