Touhou 17: Wily Beast and Weakest Creature - Lunatic 1CC HD (ReimuWolf)

...For two things, actually! For one, there's some minor hiccups with the frame rate in this recording, hope nobody minds. Touhou 17 is somewhat difficult to record for whatever reason, though the video still runs very smoothly, promise.
Secondly though, get ready to strap in for some backstory. Wily Beast and Weakest Creature was my least favorite Touhou game for the longest time. I never refused to play it or anything like that, but compared to the others, it felt somewhat barren at first to me and many other people. However, after a maddening amount of practice and careful consideration of the game's content, I can safely say that I was wrong. The video above both acts as the fruit of my labor and proof that my effort placed into the game has skyrocketed since my Normal and Hard 1CCs of this game.
So, let's start with that soundtrack! Touhou 17 has really good music, not something I would've said before either. The Lamentations Known Only by Jizo is such a cute-sounding song, and fits Stage 1 perfectly. Serephic Chicken is catchy as fuck, Beast Metropolis is hella atmospheric, and Unlocated Hell is a banger unlike anything else I've heard in the series thus far. Shoutouts to Dark Pegasus and Idolatrize World as well, they're both great.
Additionally, the gameplay proves to be highly fascinating to me. Relative to other Touhou games, you're given jack shit for resources and the attacks in general are more brutal than usual. You can tell this game was designed with the Hypers in mind, as some of these nonspells and Spell Cards are straight-up vicious, with Yachie's nonspells and Keiki's Spell Cards being great examples of that.
Ah yeah, should probably explain that. In Touhou 17, you can choose between an Eagle, Wolf, or Otter shot-type. Eagle buffs your unfocused shot, Wolf buffs the focused shot, and Otter buffs your bomb, as well as giving you one more stock per life. On top of this, you also have a gauge that allows you to collect Beast Spirits. Three of the same token grants you a "Hyper" called Berserk Roaring Mode, which either gives you a ludicrously strong unfocused shot, focused shot, or a bullet-cancelling shield that invalidates half the game. Less than three of the same token and you get a standard Roaring Mode, which can cancel bullets around you upon being activated, either by using the bomb button or getting hit.
Furthermore, the shot-types can use each Hyper to activate Roaring Modes. However, the timer for your shot-types' Hyper will be greatly extended, so it's incentivized that you mainly go after the same Beast Spirit type as your shot-type. All of them are useful in their own ways, though if there's one thing I will say to anybody who plays this game...
...Don't pick Otter. Seriously.
It's not that Otter is bad or anything. On the contrary, it's extremely strong, to the point where it cheeses a lot of the game's hardest moments. Otter-boosted bombs last forever, and the shield Hyper is simply ridiculous. Because of this, I feel like players are given little incentive to truly learn, route, and appreciate the game's strengths on its own merits. Why go through all that trouble when you can just Otter-spam and win...eventually?
Not sure if I'd go as far to say that Otter is the reason I found the game so lackluster at first, but it certainly played a big part in shaping my horrifically outdated opinion on the game. Hopefully you haven't made that same mistake, and if you have, try using Wolf or Eagle for once! They're not only really fun to use, but genuinely good too. They'll also get you to be more willing to practice stages and boss patterns, which gets you more accustomed to the music, and...I'm sure you see where I'm going with this by now. =w='
Overall, Wily Beast and Weakest Creature is a fantastic fucking game. The patterns are pretty creative, the soundtrack is a banger, the gameplay is surprisingly fun, and it just feels good to learn in general.
My only real gripe with the game at this point is the shoddy bullet visibility. There will be times (Stage 4, Extra, etc) where you'll be dodging red bullets on red backgrounds collecting red power items, and sweet lord is it just as agonizingly painful as it sounds...I also had to use a mod just so the buffed shots and Hypers are less visually distracting, which observant viewers may have noticed already.
Otherwise, if you're a fan of danmaku and enjoy labbing your games, Touhou 17 delivers in so many ways. I highly recommend it, even if it may deter you at first with the bullet visibility issues and Otter cheese. If you give the game an honest chance, practice it extensively, and go with an Eagle or Wolf shot-type instead, I can almost guarantee you that you'll fall in love with a video game all over again. Wanna know how I know that?
Because that's exactly what happened to me. :)
(PS: Geometric Creature is borderline insane, though. Seriously, what!? o___O)
