A classic duet for Renko Usami and Maribel Hearn. ...An otherwise unprecedented treat, ZUN actually wrote his own lyrics in Japanese to the main melody of the song. My lyrics are largely adapted from the wiki’s raw translation of that. May the dream be changed... The repeated phrase in ZUN’s lyrics is “yume tagae,” referring to a prayer to change the course of a bad dream, from a time when dreams were considered to be premonitions of reality. Naturally, you’d want to change a bad omen into a good one. But the Sealing Club also desires to take it a step further!
When Merry begins to feel caught between dreams and reality, she comes to ask her partner for advice. That partner, as always, is played by my one true partner, Lori ( http://lori-hime.tumblr.com ). Renko has two choices as a counselor: to convince her that her dreams meant nothing after all (so that she forgets all about it), or to convince her that they were indeed real (and thus run the risk of becoming lost to fantasy). She ultimately decides on an ideal third option: Keep dreams separate, but let them motivate you toward better and better things. This duet takes a rather solemn, reflective tone, but I think can be taken as very positive and meaningful, just like the way CoSD made me feel when I first read it.
I could never express enough thanks to ZUN, creator of the Touhou Project, for the endless stream of beautiful inspiration. Because this song is often considered to be "ZUN's theme," I made sure to use a few lines toward the end to subtly reference how amazing he is, and how his work reflects the very ideal of turning dreams into powerful reality.
