Touhou 东方云源历 ~ Tales from Floating Abyss (Demo) || Lunatic 1MNB Clear (Marisa/Sumireko)
Since we are playing some lately released demos, let's focus on a Chinese entry - Tales from Floating Abyss. This one is pretty much a standard Touhou fangame compared to Forlorn Souls.
-----
东方云源历 ~ Tales from Floating Abyss is a Chinese Touhou fangame, currently in the demo phase. It was made in LuaSTG danmaku engine and is available on Steam.
Going through all the elements of the game:
A special mechanism here is border-like system being a mix of HSiFS and UVoI.
You build up gauge by grazing, speedkilling, or canceling bullets.
Pressing C consumes the entire gauge to cancel bullets and gain item rewards.
Doing a release while at the max level will increase the level by one, consequently giving more resources on the next releases.
You can also use the gauge for a powered-up bomb. Holding X will use up your gauge and release such a bomb in place of a traditional one.
The teams in this game are Reimu/Sanae and Marisa/Sumireko.
Reimu/Sanae team is best suitable for beginners, while Marisa/Sumireko is a more advanced one due to the mechanism of exploding bullets, which require charging. Think of it like Patchouli shot from Fantastic Danmaku Festival Part I.
There's no A or B shots in this game. Instead, we have switchable shot modes - just press Shift-Z to switch between them.
As for the stages, they have rather basic patterns most of the time, maybe Stage 3 feels more prominent. Due to how Marisa & Sumireko team works, most of the time enemies get insta-killed.
At least bosses have some spice in their patterns, and they prove to be challenging.
-----
I'd say the game is not the most memorable one. It is fine in terms of bosses' patterns, has some pretty boss sprites, but that's it.
Not sure whether the final three stages in full release will change my mind - that's about to be seen. For now, seems other fangames have much more to offer nowadays.
