Toy Story (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Disney Interactive's 1995 movie tie-in platformer for the Super Nintendo, Toy Story.
Following up on the massive success of their first fully computer animated feature film, the official Toy Story game (released for SNES, Genesis, Windows 3.1/95, and Game Boy) was also a pretty big hit. Using prerendered computer generated graphics similar to Donkey King Country, it looks fantastic - using similarly rendered still for sprites and backgrounds gets the look of the game surprisingly close to that of the film. Within reason, of course.
While it is missing the extra level and some of the graphics of the Genesis version, it still looks good, largely thanks to the SNES's much larger color palette. To be fair, though, neither look as good as the Windows version.
Otherwise, Toy Story on the SNES is a solid game. The controls are a bit loose and sloppy, and it's surprisingly difficult for a game with such a kid-oriented movie license, the game still manages to be quite a bit of fun. It follows the plot of the movie pretty closely, there is a lot of variety between the stages, and it manages to evoke just enough of the charm and whimsy of the film that the warts aren't usually too glaring. It's not the best 16-bit Disney title by a long shot, but it's still definitely worth a try, especially for fans of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the brightly-colored plastic crew.
Now, if LJN's name was on it, we'd all be asking who let them poison the water hole, but thankfully that's not the case. Traveler's Tales did a good job here.
