Track Attack - Changes Everything (1996) - PC Futuristic Racing Games
Track Attack - Changes Everything by ARC Developments / Microprose, 1996
This slightly lesser known game is a bit of a strange one. It features 4 car types and 12 tracks, each of which has a novel way to begin the race (e.g. bobsleigh run). The 12 tracks then come in 3 Heats, each with more objects to avoid.
The big selling point is the DTS, or Dynamic Track System, where hitting icons on the lap makes the track reshape or jump around like an earthquake!
The soundtrack is pretty good here, although you have to manually choose a CD track to play from the pause menu, or you'll just get the same one all the time, at least on DOSbox.
Speaking of DOSbox, getting the to run "correctly" is a challenge. If you set the CPU cycles low then the game will be jerky but you'll gain lots of slidey drifting in corners. Set the cycles to max or auto and it'll run super smooth, but the physics break, with your car bouncing like a ball everywhere, cornering being too fast and you don't jump as far. Hopefully I got somewhere in the middle ground!
The first 4 clips show beginner cars from a behind-the-car view. The next 4 show in-car views, and the final 4 show upgraded cars (you can upgrade cars before racing). This covers 1 lap of each track in it's Heat 1 configuration.
