Transfer file between two PCs using Ethernet cable (RJ45) without router. Very Easy. Windows 10/11.
Using RJ45 Ethernet cable, you can transfer file between two PCs easily with this tutorial.
What you will need:
RJ45 Ethernet cable
Two machines (PC or Laptop), both with RJ45 port.
What you will do:
1. Connect both machines (PC or Laptop) with RJ45 Ethernet cable. You can use router but not necessary needed. You do not need Internet connection to do this unless you want to.
2. Confirm the connection by looking at RJ45 port LED. If both of them light up, then proceed. If not, please reconnect or replace cable. Tip: RJ45 port will make click sound, meaning it connected properly.
Don't worry if Windows tells you "Unidentified network". Just proceed to next step.
3. After that you can start configuring by setting folder sharing. You can do this by going to the machine/PC/Laptop that you want to share the folder and choose a folder.
Right click on it, and click "Properties". Then you have to click on "Sharing" tab, and click on "Advanced Sharing".
4. Here you need to check " Share this folder" before you can begin configuring. You can type any name you want as long it is not peculiar and easy to remember. Clicking on "Permission" will let you control how the folder will be shared. If you want to do copy and paste, I recommend you to tick "Full Control" and then click OK.
5. Once everything is done, click OK. You will then get to see the address on
"Network File and Folder Sharing" section, on the same "Sharing" tab previously. It show something like this: "\\Yourpcname\foldernameyousetearlier" (without quote). Write this down on a piece or paper or remember it exactly you can.
6. Go to target PC that you wanted to share the folder with.
7. Open "This PC" or "My Computer" and right click on the blank space where no folder on the cursor, and choose Add a network location.
8. Simply click "Next" and select "Choose a custom network location". Right after you clicked "Next" you will be then asked to put the address. Input the address exactly like the one that appeared before, the one that looked like this: "\\Yourpcname\foldernameyousetearlier" (without quote). After that you can proceed by clicking Next. It will freeze for a few second but actually it is running in the background so you just wait.
9. There are one or two conditions here:
9a. If you set a password on your Windows user account, please prepare username and password because you will need this. You will be asked to input the credentials once you clicked "Next". Find username at "Task Manager - Users".
9b. If your Windows user account is logged in with Microsoft account, you will need username and the password. The e-mail you registered/created with Microsoft account is the username. You will be asked to input the credentials once you clicked "Next". Find username at "Task Manager - Users".
9c. If you don't set the password, you most likely were not asked for the credentials once you clicked "Next". But if it does, enter the username but blank password (maybe, didn't tried it yet).
9d. If you turn off "Password-protected sharing" inside "Control Panel - Network and Sharing Centre - Advanced sharing settings - All networks", you most likely were not asked for the credentials once you clicked "Next".
10. Once everything is done, you will then get to put any name you want because it will appear inside "This PC". After that, click Next and Finish. Now you're done!
11. Enjoy!
