Old 1CC run from 2016 that I finally recorded.

TriZeal is one of the Triangle Service shmups, a dev who could be considered as a JP indie dev before "indie" really was a big thing. Made by 2 guys (one dev and one composer), this shmup is in between older and modern shmups. Hitboxes aren't microscopic and the stage setpieces are reminiscent of older games, but there are some more advanced mechanics and a medal-based scoring system.

The main mechanic in this game is the weapon powerup system and stance switch, where the ship has three stanaces/main weapons it can freely switch between : laser, homing, and wide shot. Unlike old games where collecting powerups changed your weapon, you can change any time you want here (thank goodness!), and collecting powerups will increase the power of the currently active stance.

Each weapon has 5 power levels and if a weapon is powered up enough, it can even be active during other stances. However, if the global power of all 3 combined weapons can also apparently activate a dynamic difficulty switch. I wasn't sure if you had to have more than 10 or 11 power levels combined to trigger it, so I maxed out shot, upgraded laser to 3 and left homing at the default 1 and called it a day since I wanted to avoid triggering the harder difficulty. I always stayed in wide shot stance after upgrading the laser so any powerups I would collect afterwards would give me bonus points instead, so no worries about powerup dodging either.

There is also a medal chaining system where killed ennemies drop medals and those increase in value as long as you don't drop one. I tried to chain a few of them at times but since they fall veeery fast and I was mostly focused on survival 1CC with a wide shot that seems unfit for precision shooting and medalling, I assume I didn't have tons of great chains.

On top of that you have plenty of secrets like speedkilling some enemies, juggling the rock and pestering the pigeon in stage 2, and plenty of others. These can give you points but also bombs so it can be useful to look them up.

The reason I chose the 2P side is that it's faster.

The game is pretty fun to clear overall despite the very padded and repetitive asteroid section in stage 4, and music is good too. I was able to get said clear in a few hours, it's fairly approachable I'd say.

Played on PC (Steam), replay recorded with OBS Studio.
