Turkey | Chuck's World | TVO Docs
Chuck flies to Turkey and visits the town of Izmir along the coast of the Aegean Sea. Contrary to popular belief, Turkish coffee is not a type of coffee but a method of preparing this popular Turkish drink. Chuck meets with Izmir's chef Fisun Ercan to learn how to prepare this traditional drink from the grinding of the beans to the final tasting. Chuck walks through Kemeralti market, a labyrinthine bazaar that dates back to the 17th century and is home to shops, eateries, artisans' workshops, mosques, coffeehouses, tea gardens and synagogues. No visit to Turkey is complete without the tasting of one its most unique dishes: Borek. Chuck tries his hand at preparing this pastry made of a thin flaky dough at the Balmumu, one of the most exclusive restaurants in Izmir. Olive oil is one of the basis of Turkish cuisine. Chuck joins the residents of the nearby villages of Izmir for the olive harvest. After a hard day's work he cooks the local barbounia fish in an ancient stone oven in the middle of the olive grove.
