Background App Refresh on iPhone allows apps to update their content in the background, even when you're not actively using them. This helps keep apps like Mail, News, or fitness trackers current without needing to open them. However, enabling this feature can affect battery life and data usage, so it's important to understand how to manage it correctly.

To turn on Background App Refresh, open the Settings app on your iPhone. From the main Settings screen, scroll down and tap on 'General'. Within the General settings, you'll see the 'Background App Refresh' option—tap it to open its configuration menu.

Here, you'll see a setting at the top that lets you choose between three modes: Off, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data. Select 'Wi-Fi' if you want apps to refresh only when connected to a wireless network, which helps conserve mobile data. Choose 'Wi-Fi & Cellular Data' if you're okay with apps refreshing even while on a mobile network. Below this, you’ll see a list of individual apps with toggles. You can turn off background refresh for specific apps that you don’t need running in the background, which can help save battery.

Note that not all apps support Background App Refresh, and the feature only works efficiently when Low Power Mode is turned off. If Low Power Mode is enabled, Background App Refresh will be paused until the mode is disabled.

Using this feature wisely lets you balance convenience with performance and battery efficiency.
