This video tutorial by ChopBam will walk you through the process of texturing a very basic map, from having some meshes with no textures, to being able to walk around ingame and behold the beauty of tiled color! We use 3DS Max 2017 (with its associated w3d export plugin) and Mammoth for this process. If you need to create a directory for referencing your textures from 3DS Max, you will need to use the XCC Mixer application, which is also available in the SDK.
