Twisted Metal 2 is a demolition derby which permits the usage of ballistic projectiles. Players choose a vehicle and an arena—or a series of arenas in the story mode—to engage in battle with opposing drivers. A variety of weapons are obtainable by pick-ups scattered throughout the stage. The objective of the game is to be the last remaining player. Two player duel mode makes a return from the first Twisted Metal, and a co-operative mode allows players to fight through tournament mode with a teammate. There is no ending if the game is completed in co-operative mode.

Unlockable:
(In character select screen)
Press: L1, Up, Down, Left to unlock Minion.
Press: up, L1, Triangle, Right to unlock Sweet Tooth

While in game:

God Mode (Invincibility+ Infinite weapons): Hold L1 + R1, L2 + R2 press up, down, left, right, right, left, down, up, release L1 + R1, L2 + R2 (code must be entered quickly)

Drop Mine = Right, Left, Down
Freeze = Left, Right, Up
Jump = Up, Up, Left
Napalm = Right, Left, Up
Rear Attack = Left, Right, Down
Temporary Invisibility = Right, Down, Left, Up
Temporary Shield = Up, Up, Right
